About the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra
The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is made up of 56 musicians from Canada and around the world. Under the musical direction of William Eddins, the orchestra performs more than 80 concerts each season, and, with Eddins, also accompanies performances by Edmonton Opera and Alberta Ballet.
Though the ESO was officially founded in 1952, its roots date to 1920, when an orchestra began playing with some regularity in Edmonton. 1971 was a double landmark year for the ESO: it became a full-time, rather than part-time orchestra, and joined forces with a British rock band to record Procul Harum Live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra—the first album with an orchestra to go platinum.

The ESO is proud to call the magnificent Francis Winspear Centre for Music, located in downtown Edmonton’s Arts District, its performance home. The orchestra is equally proud to be making its Carnegie Hall debut as part of the 2012 Spring for Music festival. For more information, visit edmontonsymphony.com.
About Edmonton, Alberta
In the late eighteenth century, what was then Fort Edmonton was an important trading post for the mighty Hudson’s Bay Company. Now, Edmonton is a booming city at the heart of a region of more than a million people, nestled in the center of Alberta—a province with one of the richest reserves of oil and natural gas in the world. It is also home to one of professional hockey’s most legendary franchises, the Edmonton Oilers, five-time winners of the Stanley Cup. The capital city of the province, and the 2007 cultural capital of Canada, Edmonton bustles with surprises and a calendar packed with artistic, sporting, theatrical and cultural celebration.
Edmonton’s river valley is amazing. An enormous band of natural green space 22 times larger than Central Park in New York, it runs through the center of the city and is filled with parks, trails and endless opportunities for adventure.
This is a city of boundless opportunity—a growing economic powerhouse where business thrives and residents enjoy the freedom to explore, experiment, experience and excel.
