SPRINGING FOR ORCHESTRAS
Published: Symphony, July/August 2009
Spring for Music, an orchestra festival bound for Carnegie Hall
in May 2011, announced its seven participating orchestras in April.
The organizing group, called the Festival of North American Orchestra,
chose the seven - the Albany (N.Y.), Atlanta, Dallas, Montreal, Oregon,
and Toledo symphonies and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra - based
on their innovative programming. The festival was first announced
in January as an opportunity for orchestras to program adventurously
wihtout any worries about marketability. A grant of $1 million from
the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will underwrite the first three
annual festivals.
